Good Boot: offers multiple ways to do variety of tasks

In this Part 14 of my Windows 7 tutorial, I'll continue a tour of Windows Explorer.

I'm sure for most, the selections available on the Windows Explorer Menu bar will be familiar.

But the Menu bar does provide an opportunity for me to mention one of Window 7's most useful features - multiple ways to do stuff.

Note: If you've not done so already, you can display your Menu bar by clicking on Organize, Layout, and clicking on the Menu bar check box.

If you recall, my personalization tutorials demonstrated how programs, files, folders, and Web pages can be Pinned to your Start menu and/or your Toolbar or located on your Desktop as a Shortcut, three ways to ensure you can access what you want to access the way it's most convenient for you to do so.

Well when it comes to viewing files (text, photos, music and videos) not only does Windows provide multiple ways to view a file, Window provides convenient locations to access a list of views - even a slide show of views if you're not sure which view suits you best.

When you click on View on your Menu bar you're offered eight views - Extra large icons, Large icons, Medium icons, Small icons, List, Details, and Content. When you select any one of the views, that view will become the default view for viewing text, photos, music, and video files. But viewing let's say a text file with a view set at Large icons is certainly not the most useful view.

However, know that Windows provides a way to quickly adjust a file's view even if you've opted not to display your Menu bar.

Click on your Menu bar's View and click Large icons. Now click Organize, Layout and uncheck Menu bar.

Now highlight any text file in your My Documents.

Although a Large, Medium or Small view of your Photo, Video, and Music album covers files would be revealing, they would not provide any significant information about the highlighted text file.

So to quickly find a more appropriate view, look to the top right of your viewing panel and click on the Change your view icon. Each time you click on the Change your view icon a new view of your text file will appear. Obviously Details will be your best view.

Note: You can also click on the little down triangle to the right of the Change your view icon. A list of views with a slider to access each view will appear.
